WHY VISIT EXUMA BAHAMAS? HERE ARE 6 GREAT REASONS

Swimming with Sharks in Compass Cay, Exuma, Bahamas

A great experience Swimming with Sharks in Compass Cay: We originally decided to visit Compass Cay because of its reputation for beautiful beaches and shark encounters, and we had planned to anchor out and dinghy in to see the island.

The marina is yet another reason to love Compass Cay. Even though it has fixed docks, we made it work for taking our dogs on and off with a ramp that we’d brought along for them. The docks look almost new and were in great shape. The marina is a favourite for large power yachts and everyone on staff was helpful. It was our first time here, but the folks we chatted with on other big yachts say they come here frequently.

There is no bar or restaurant just a little store where they sell soft drinks, hats, T-shirt’s etc. It seems you can get a hot dog or burger and fries if you talk to the right person at the right time. Without a restaurant, it makes for a very quiet and laid back marina most of the time. While the island is very sparsely populated, less than 100, the exception is the frequent visits from excursion boats and dinghies to see and swim with the sharks.

The Compass Cay Nurse Sharks are the stars of the marina, but the friendly staff here is a close second. In the evening, it’s just the folks from the few docked boats and the staff left at the marina. Everyone gathers on the dock by the office to talk, tell fish stories, and have a drink and a laugh together (BYOB). Some nights residents, staff, or visitors will organize hermit crab races from hermit crabs you can find as you trek about the small island. Yet another reason to love Compass Cay!

If you plan to stay in a rental home here, there aren’t many (which is a BONUS as the beaches always seem to be empty), but the ones we saw looked to be new and in great condition. We also saw a few being built and they looked to be sound and well made too.

We came in at low tide and our 44 ft catamaran was by far the smallest boat in the marina. The water looked about 3 feet deep by dock ‘A’, the depth was never less than seven feet. We had to break out the ramp we brought along for the dogs and use it here because of the fixed dock & tides. They did very well with it, no fear on their part and we got to practice the WAIT command a lot! The harbour itself offers a lot of protection if you are looking to get out of some bad weather. Bonefish, nurse sharks, jacks, etc., are everywhere around the docks. At dusk the fish get really active and more fish come in from surrounding areas. It makes for quite a show if you just want to enjoy a drink and observe the fish ‘nightlife’ that’s all around.

Book your next tour to Compass Cay with Embrace. Launch from a great base at Staniel cay then visit all the surrounding Islands with our Yacht Rentals

WHY VISIT EXUMA BAHAMAS? HERE ARE 6 GREAT REASONS

WHY VISIT EXUMA BAHAMAS? HERE ARE 6 GREAT REASONS

1: Swimming Pigs in Exuma

How the pigs initially got to Exuma for some people is the 8th wonder of the world and the legendary myth continues to baffle visitors but on visiting the Island make sure to speak with the locals and your tour guide to unravel the great mystery.

How did the pigs get so tame? Every day someone would come by the island to feed and take care of the pigs, and as pigs are intelligent animals motivated by food, they eventually began to associate the sound of the boat engines with supper. Soon the pigs began to stand in the ocean as they waited for their food. To the surprise to their caretakers, the pigs eventually started swimming out towards the boats.

It is definitely an interesting experience that you CANNOT miss when you visit Exuma Bahamas!

2: Snorkeling in Exuma

The water in Exuma is so clear you can literally drop a Diamond Ring inside and find it. Yes this actually happened and was found! Plus you can put on some goggles and snorkel anywhere you want. Between the colorful fish, sea slugs, turtles, starfish, and sharks, your Exuma snorkeling adventure won’t have a dull moment.

Thunderball Grotto has lots of Film & Hollywood history. Some of you 007 fans may recognize the name, Thunderball Grotto. In fact, this island was used as a filming location for the two James Bond films: Thunderball and Never Say Never!

The outside of this cave is beautifully surrounded by the Bahama Blue water Exuma is known for, but it’s the inside that truly counts! A large hallow cavern with holes in the ceiling with the sun’s rays shining through, lighting up the cave and hundreds of colorful fish swimming below, is why everyone stops here at high noon.

Snorkeling next to beautiful fish and exploring this famous cave was truly an unforgettable experience.

3: Compass Cay - Swim With The Sharks

While it might seem terrifying to swim with sharks in Exuma, these are actually quite harmless. Nurse sharks are slow moving bottom feeders who prefer fish, shrimp, and squid. However, they do have very small, but strong jaws and will bite defensively if they are stepped on or bothered so it’s important to be respectful.

Don’t let fear stand in the way of your next great Exuma adventure!

4: Iguanas in Guana Cay, Bahamas

When in Exuma, make sure to visit Guana Cay.

Hanging out with these indigenous Iguanas in Guana Cay is always a favorite part of our tours. Many people have actually never seen an Iguana live and up close before and many times becomes people’s new favorite animal! They’re like little dragons (or Godzillas) you can pet!

5: The Sand Bar in Exuma - 1 Mile Long

The Mile-Long Sandbar in Exuma got its name for being…one mile long.

The amazing thing about this sandbar is the water is only knee deep, so you can walk for miles into the ocean (this makes for some excellent seashell hunting). Once on the tour so many come across fully intact conch shell, starfish, sting rays, several schools of fish, and and sea slugs… just to mention a few natural observations! Of course, once again, the crystal clear water will definitely help your search.

David Copperfield was right when he called this sandbar “Heaven on Earth”.

Staying at Staniel Cay the nearest Sandbar is just 2.5 Miles [Sandy Cay] away and can easily be reached using our Staniel Cay boat tours.

6: Clear Sea Waters in Exuma

700 islands make up the Bahamas with about 300+ in the Exuma Cays [out of the cluster of the main 7 Islands we at Embrace have 7 Villas of them] and each and every one of them is surrounded by crystal clear and almost impossibly blue water.  It looks like the ocean was filled with premium bottled water!!

I have seen different oceans and seas around the world but the sea water in the Exumas is by far the clearest. Talk about “Bahama Blue”!

Check out our Villas below and get a real taste of 12 beautiful Islands in one breath taking place.
